All through his years playing basketball, he has overcome a great deal of challenges left and right. So, why did Kobe Paras not take the challenges offered by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) by joining the recent Draft?
If he has ambitions of making basketball a career, Paras is losing traction at the moment. He’s not actively playing after his 2022 Japan B League stint and at the prime of his life. He’s missing the boat.
Paras was once FIBA’s 3x3 poster boy, played at the US NCAA D-1 level with Creighton and has suited up for Gilas. He’s got the talent and skills to shake up the PBA. So what’s holding him back?
The rumor mill in Philippine basketball churns with the possibility of Paras, son of PBA legend Benjie Paras, suiting up for the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) team Marikina to prepare him for a possible PBA stint next year.
While the news remains unconfirmed by Kobe's camp, it sparks debate on whether this is the right move for the young player.
Kobe's stint in the 2022 Japan B League season wasn't spectacular. Averaging 8.2 points with moderate shooting percentages. This might have fueled his Kthinking that he is not yet ready for the PBA and the MPBL gives him that oppportunity to grow.
The MPBL, a developing league, could offer a platform to showcase his skills and potentially raise his draft stock.
While the MPBL offers a starting point, the PBA remains the pinnacle of Philippine basketball. Entering the draft and potentially landing on a legitimate PBA team would expose Kobe to a higher level of competition and coaching, accelerating his development. His talent and lineage will undoubtedly attract interest from several teams.
In the meantime, while he has temporarily stepped away from basketball, Paras reached a new milestone after being on the cover of MEGA Man Magazine’s July edition.
The magazine puts the spotlight on the baller who seems eager to turn a new chapter in his life, as he is "courageously taking a step back from the life he’s known since he was a kid and is finally living life in his own terms."
Fans are raring to see Paras hop back on the court again. After mutually parting ways with Altiri in the Japan B League, it remains to be seen where the athletic wingman will take his talents
Wherever it might be, he can count on his fellow countrymen to support—and sometimes, criticize—him.
