Newsome Signs New Deal With Meralco

The Meralco Bolts has secured their future by signing Chris Newsome to a new three-year deal by the Bolts. This means he will still be the main man for the team that selected him No. 4 overall during the 2014 draft.

The 35-year-old guard out of Ateneo is already an unrestricted free agent as a member of the 2015 draft class, but opted to remain as a Bolt.

Pureblends Takes Over Northport Franchise

The PBA franchise of NorthPort is finally being taken over by a food solution provider specializing in custom food manufacturing.

As per multiple sources by SPIN.ph, negotiations for the sale of the franchise lock, stock, and barrel between the Batang Pier and the team’s official buyer Pureblends Corp. was completed to the tune of PhP 90 million, reportedly paid in two tranches.

How Did Raymond Almazan Ended Up With The Bolts In 2019?

In early 2019, Raymond Almazan was reported to have a tumultuous relationship with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. The marquee center was included in a package, which was approved by the PBA, that sent him to Meralco in exchange for the Bolts' 2019 and 2021 first-round draft picks.

Almazan played six games for the Elasto Painters in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup after going AWOL due to a misunderstanding with Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia. The two patched things up during the offseason but it appears the relationship never fully mended.

The Meralco Bolts has secured their frontline depth by extending big man Raymond Almazan's tenure with the team. Team manager Paolo Trillo and players agent Danny Espiritu were with the veteran center when he signed the two-year contract.

Now 36, Almazan remains a vital cog in the Bolts’ frontcourt rotation along with fellow veterans Cliff Hodge and Kyle Pascual, Toto Jose, and young gun Brandon Bates.

Just when the PBA fans are about to see some improved and quality plays, a hammer came crushing down last 18 July to squash that hope. Terrafirma Dyip decided to stay put for the PBA’s 50th season instead of fading away.

League commissioner Willie Marcial announced that plans to sell the Dyip franchise to the Zamboanga Valientes fell through as the two teams failed to strike an agreement.

The Pampanga Lanterns in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) has announced that they made some significant moves to bolster their bid for a third consecutive crown by signing former Meralco Bolts player Alvin Pasaol.

The Bolts have opted not to renew Pasaol’s contract, effectively closing the chapter of his professional stint in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). The decision paves the way for the former UE Warriors star to continue his basketball career with the Lanterns.

The Zamboanga Valientes was reportedly in talks right now with top management of Terrafirma and close to acquiring the latter's PBA franchise. This was confirmed by Valientes team owner Junnie Navarro to SPIN.ph.

"We’ve already met with Terrafirma and it’s almost a done deal," said Navarro about the ongoing negotiations with the Dyip management led by team governor Bobby Rosales.

Early in December 2024, Meralco officially activated the rookie guard Kurt Reyson heading to their match against Blackwater in the PBA Commissioner's Cup, which they lost.

Reyson was taken by the Bolts in the second round of the last rookie draft at No. 23 overall, but didn't play with the team outright to finish his contract obligations in the MPBL where he played for two-time champion Pampanga Giant Lanterns.

In May 2023, the Meralco Bolts acquired big man Norberto Torres from Rain or Shine (ROS) in Luigi Trillo’s first move since assuming head coaching chores.

Coach Trillo, who got his appointment on the first week of May, let go of forward Mac Belo to get the rights to Torres. The 6-foot-6 slotman from La Salle was expected to beef up the Bolts’ frontline led by Raymond Almazan and Cliff Hodge.

The 2024-25 East Asia Super League (EASL) tournament will start on 2 October and the Meralco Bolts are set to parade former Ateneo Blue Eagles superstar Ange Kouame as their naturalized player. For this to happen, the burly rebounder had to make a major decision to be able to suit up for the reigning Philippine Cup champions.

"I had to sacrifice a lot to be able to be in this position because I turned down my contract with France to be able to do that." the 6-foot-11 slotman relayed to One Sports in an exclusive interview.

Meralco Bolts fans should expect to see more of active coaching consultant Nenad Vucinic in the suceeding games because he has a year left in his PBA contract. Vucinic, 59, played a key role in Meralco’s ascension to the Philippine Cup throne, calling the shots in collaboration with head coach Luigi Trillo.

It was Vucinic who designed the final play for Chris Newsome to take the winning shot with 3.3 seconds left in Game Six of the Finals last 16 June 2024. Meralco called a timeout after June Mar Fajardo knocked down a miracle three to tie it, 78-all.

In the episode of his "No Cooking Show" podcast a few weeks ago, Snow Badua revealed a very interesting rumor Rain or Shine wanting to trade Caelan Tiongson, the number 7 pick in the last PBA Draft. The main reason given is that Tiongson is looking to get a deal that is way above a rookie contract.

Given the history of Rain or Shine of not giving in to the player's unreasonable demands, it might be logical for them to just trade him and get something in return instead of holding on to his reights for eternity.

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is trying to protect the interest of team owners by disalowing any player transactions such as trades during the suspension of games of the 2020 season brought about by COVID-19.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said the league’s board approved such status quo during a video conference last 2 May where the governors discussed plans for the remainder of the year.

When the country's enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) ends, PBA free agent Noy Baclao is set to reunite with college coach Norman Black after Meralco acquired the services of the veteran forward from Bacolod City.

The former top rookie overall pick is still recovering from surgery on a ruptured right patellar tendon he suffered on opening day of last year’s PBA Governors Cup, and has been temporarily put on the reserve list of the Bolts.
