Thirdy Ravena's signing to Japanese B.League team SanEn NeoPhoenix may have opened a new pathway for other Filipino basketball players to play there, but not everyone is interested.
Phoenix forward Calvin Abueva confirmed that he too has gotten an offer to play in Japan, but he politely declined.
"Sa ngayon, hindi ko pa masyado nahaharap kasi may contract pa ko, saka kung ako masusunod gusto ko muna ayusin yung sa PBA," said the former PBA Rookie of the Year awardee. "Yun naman talaga ang gusto natin."
A day after Calvin Abueva’s agent received notice of the interest of a Japanese club in Abueva, Meralco Bolt's Raymond Almazan also received interest from a club.
Unlike Ravena and Abueva who were recruited by agents, this time around, it was a player who recruited Almazan. American-Japanese guard Samuel Sawaji of Tokyo Cinq RĂªves directly messaged the seven-year pro.
"I also work on the social media platform for one of the most successful agencies here. They have told me you are a player they would have interest in helping continue succeed as a pro," the eight-year pro in Japan's premier league said. "I can send you more information if you are interested?"
Almazan, though, politely declined the offer.
Currently, the 6-foot-8 native of Orion, Bataan is at a start of a three-year max deal with Meralco. And just like Abueva, the PBA is his priority.
