Bahrain Will Host PBA Games This December

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is set to hold its first official games in Bahrain as part of its 50th anniversary celebration.

Commissioner Willie Marcial and Bahrain Basketball Association president Alaa Mudara officially signed the contract for the 15-17 December 2025 event that will feature three PBA teams playing two games. Mudara is the president of the Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA).

The current All-Filipino Champions Meralco Bolts are set to launch their PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup campaign against the Phoenix Fuel Masters on 29 November at 5:00 P.M. at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

With high hopes for a strong start, Meralco will be banking on their new import, Akil Mitchell, who has already impressed in the East Asia Super League (EASL).

Meralco Bolts' 2024-2025 EASL Schedule

The Meralco Bolts will compete in its second straight East Asia Super League (EASL) season starting on 2 October. The Bolts will take on the Macau Black Bears at Manila’s SM Mall of Asia Arena in its first match. Despite missing out on a Final Four spot during the EASL’s inaugural season, Meralco picked up a surprise win 97-88 win over the Ryukyu Golden Kings — the 2023 B.LEAGUE champions.

But the Bolts’ shortcomings in EASL shouldn’t overshadow their domestic accomplishments in 2023-24. In the 2024 PBA Philippine Cup, Meralco took down long-time rivals San Miguel Beermen to win its first-ever PBA championship.

Three Provincial Games in the PBA Calendar

There will be three provincial games of the PBA Governors' Cup including a revisit to the venue that produced a full-house crowd in one of the out-of-town trips last season.

Barangay Ginebra and Rain or Shine kick off the provincial sortie in Season 49 as they clash in Candon, Ilocos Sur on 24 August.

Meralco Bolts' 2024 Governor's Cup Schedule

Everything will be very hectic, frantic and non-stop when the PBA kicks off its Season 49 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on 18 August 2024.

A total of six playdates are scheduled in the first month of the season-opener Governors' Cup as the league paves way for two major international tournaments of which the PBA is a major part.

Bolts-Kings Matchup Was Postponed

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) postponed the 4:35 P.M. encounter between the Meralco Bolts and the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings last 5 September in accordance with the PBA's health and safety protocols.

The match will be rescheduled at a later date following league guidelines.

PBA To Restart on 1 September

Everything appears to be moving ahead for the PBA restart three weeks after it was forced to suspend play due to the surge of COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila. The league has already secured the approval from Don Honorio Ventura State University gym in Bacolor, Pampanga.

"I would like to express my great appreciation to the endorsements of Gov. Dennis Pineda and Cong. Dong Gonzales. Sobrang laki ng tulong nila," said PBA commissioner Willie Marcial in the PBA website

Batangas Is Out. What Is The Alternative?

The PBA initially eyed Batangas to hold the the game resumption under a semi-bubble setup since it also served as venue for teams to hold practices when 5-on-5 scrimmages were allowed by the IATF. However, the province is now in a General Community Quarantine (GCQ) or a modified GCQ.

This condition makes the holding of games in Batangas not viable anymore. What are the alternatives for the PBA Philippine Cup?

PBA Games Suspended Starting 4 August

The PBA announced on 3 August that it is temporarily suspending its All-Filipino Cup games, in an effort to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant.

This came after the National Capital Region (NCR) was placed under general community quarantine with heightened and additional restrictions from 30 July to 5 August. The league had been holding its games at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City since 16 July.

PBA Apologizes for Schedule and Coverage Confusion

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial has apologized to league fans for the confusion that marred the television schedule and livestream coverage of the first few games of the 2021 Philippine Cup.

Fans were disappointed after games that pitted TNT against Terrafirma and Magnolia against Phoenix Super LPG a few days ago were not aired on free TV channel ONE Sports as previously announced, and only on cable channel PBA Rush.

It Could Be An All-Filipino Affair With No All-Star Game In PBA 2020

It could be an All-Filipino affair this year as PBA commissioner Willie Marcial admitted it would be difficult to stage a conference with imports once the go-signal is given for the league to finally resume its 45th season.

He added that it is doubtful that there would be enough overseas talent willing to risk and take their acts in the country with no vaccine yet available for COVID-19.

After three games, the Meralco Bolts were able to remain unbeaten. However, extreme caution should be observed since the first two games were against teams that consistently remain at the bottom half of the standings, while the last game was against TnT KaTropa that did not have Jayson Castro in the line-up.

Jared Dillinger understands this since the next schedule of games will be the real test. The next game will be against the defending champion Rain or Shine Elastopainters, who are also undefeated in three starts, then All-Filipino champions San Miguel Beermen and after that the Alaska Aces.

The Meralco Bolts finished the last season on high note. They just came off a runner-up appearance in the 2016 Governors’ Cup Finals after losing in six games against the Barangay Ginebra squad.

They defied all odds after finishing the All-Filipino Cup dead last with a dismal record of 1-10. From there, they worked their way up, finishing on the top four during the Commissioner's Cup with Arinze Onuaku as import before Allen Durham carried them to their first finals appearance.

Former Barako Bull import Allen Durham will debut for the Meralco Bolts in the opening day of the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup on 15 July.

Durham is looking to lead the Bolts when they take on the Phoenix Fuel Masters at 4:15 p.m. at Smart Araneta Coliseum. Expected to provide support Durham are the Bolts veteran players, including Reynel Hugnatan, Jared Dillinger, Cliff Hodge and Jimmy Alapag.

The Meralco Bolts finished the 2015-2016 PBA Philippine Cup with a dismal record of 1-10. The players are inconsistent, the plays are erratic and the team as a whole were uninspired. It also marked as Meralco's worst record in franchise history since they joined the league way back in 2010.

Rookies Chris Newsome, Baser Amer, and Joseph Sedurifa showed some flashes of brilliance, but they are still unable to close pressure-packed games. The return of Rabeh Al-Hussaini has notimproved the bench that much, while new recruits Jimmy Alapag, Ronjay Buenafe, Justin Chua and Bryan Faundo ony showed a glimpse of what they have in the past.

They made it to the Final Four in the just concluded Commissioner's Cup, but were convincingly defeated by the more experienced Rain or Shine Elastopainters in a 3-game sweep. It was a bitter pill to swallow, but it was also an indication of what the team can achieve given the right personnel and attitude.

In the coming 2015 Governor's Cup, the Bolts will be parading one of the most explosive import ever to grace the team, NBA D-League All-Star MVP Andre Emmet. The 6-foot-4 forward is expected to carry much of the scoring load together with chief gunner Gary David and Cliff Hodge. The team will also be reinforced by Iranian playmaker Benny Koochoie after their original choice, Mahdi Kamrani, had to attend to his pregnant wife.

The Meralco Bolts finished with 6 wins and 5 losses in the Philippine Cup. They were ousted in the second phase of the Quarterfinals by the Alaska Aces in a convincing fashion.

Meralco had some shining moments in the Philippine Cup, but they also absorbed some of the worst losses — lost to the Aces by 41 and lost to Rain or Shine Elastopainters by 28.

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) announced that there will be four out-of-town games scheduled in the upcoming elimination round of the Philippine Cup. However, if you count another game in Biñan, Laguna, then there should be 5 out-of-town games in all.

From the ‘five’ provincial games, the Meralco Bolts will be playing in two of them. The first one will be against the Rain or Shine Elastopainters on 15 November in Davao City, while the other one will be against the defending champs, San Mig Coffee Mixers, on 23 November in Laguna.
