Chris Newsome may have avoided a major major injury after getting hurt during Meralco’s first defeat of the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup last 22 August. With the Bolts star injured the TNT Tropang Giga pulled off a second-half storm to thump Meralco, 93-73, and go up 2-0 in the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup.
Newsome initially twisted his left ankle and left knee in the first quarter, but returned to the game without much trace of pain. A few moments later, the Gilas Pilipinas standout rolled the same ankle in the third quarter, following another awkward landing on his teammate’s foot.
Relaying the team doctor’s initial diagnosis, the Bolts’ main man said that there is no structural damage to his left knee and ankle, although both will be checked further through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.
Newsome, who was aided to Meralco’s dugout still with around 30 seconds to spare in the match, ended the night with 15 points to his name.
"As far as the knee, I could still walk, I could still bend. So structurally, the team doctor says everything is OK with my knee, just a light sprain," he said.
"But other than that, I think it feels pretty much like your typical ankle sprain, but there’s nothing structurally wrong. Of course, we’re gonna get the MRIs and stuff tomorrow, and see how it goes from there," Newsome continued.
Chris Banchero carried the cudgels for Meralco with 17 points and 4 assists on a night when resident import Allen Durham had a cold performance, contributing only 8 points and 10 rebounds.
Meralco dropped to 1-1 after eking out a season-opening win against the Magnolia Hotshots.
