The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is bringing back the unlimited height among imports in next season's Commissioner's Cup.
League chief Willie Marcial disclosed recently that the Board of Governors gave the green light to tap imports of any height for the mid-season tournament next year. However, the Governors Cup, which opens Season 49 by the middle of August, will retain its previous height limit of 6-foot-6 among imports.
"Pumayag na din ang Board sa pino-propose ko na unlimited height ang import sa Commissioner's Cup 2nd Conference," said Marcial a day after holding a meeting with the Board.
The last time the league allowed no height limit for imports was in the 2016 Commissioner's Cup, although only the bottom four teams from the previous Philippine Cup were allowed to tap import with unlimited height.
Marcial also mentioned about the PBA bringing back again the two-import format in a conference especially should the guest team the league is talking agrees to play in the Commissioner's Cup.
The commissioner however, would not divulge yet the identity of the possible guest ballclub.
"As of now, bukas sila (Board) sa two imports. Sigurado yun pag sumali yung kausap namin, baka mag two imports tayo," said Marcial.
Playing two imports per team has been a staple in the league during the 80s up to the 90s and gave birth to such explosive tandem like Billy Ray Bates and Michael Hackett for Ginebra, Michael Young and Haroled Keeling for Manila Beer, Tanduay's Andre McKoy and the late Rob Williams, Anejo's Tommy Davis and Joe Ward, Michael Phelps and Norman Black for San Miguel, to Mobiline's Silas Mills and Artemus McClary.
