Two drafting scenario will most probably play out on 30 October 2016. The first one involves the regular process of picking players from the amateurs taking into consideration the performance of teams in the 41st season and the deals they made with it.
The special draft, on the other hand, will be based on the framework where each team is assured to pick one from the Gilas pool depending on its standing from the previous season without taking to account the draft trade rights.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio said the planned PBA special draft is about "95 percent" sure for the 12 incoming rookies who will be named in the Gilas program. The proposal is still subject to the approval by the league’s board.
"We've been meeting on it (draft process). It’s been a collaborative effort between the PBA and the SBP and I think it’s a great signal to the fans that both institutions are working together," Panlilio told FOX Sports.
The special draft means Star, a team that is supposed to give away its rights for the second overall pick to Phoenix in a previous deal can still nab a top-caliber talent from the national team program.
The SBP plans to name the newly-formed Gilas squad soon, and Panlilio hopes the identified players will be committed to the program.
"We're hoping. This is the national team, I think it should be an honor for them to play for the national flag" said Panlilio, who also serves as Meralco’s team governor.
Expected to be part of the Gilas pool are Kiefer Ravena, Bobby Ray Parks, Mac Belo, Kevin Ferrer, Roger Pogoy, Mike Tolomia and Russell Escoto.
Moreover, Panlilio said that Gilas members, once drafted, will be allowed to play for their respective mother teams for at least two conferences next season and will just be pulled out in time to prepare for FIBA-sponsored events.
The regular draft will follow suit, which is so far composed of 17 aspirants led by former FEU wingman Carl Bryan Cruz.
