The PBA Man Mountain has spoken and he agrees about the presence of "farm teams" in Asias oldest basketball league.
Retired basketball player Ali Peek voiced his support for Converge FiberXers assistant coach Danilo "Danny" Ildefonso, who referred to the NorthPort Batang Pier as a "farm team." In the post mentioning that Ildefonso was fined PhP 20,000 for his remarks, which were deemed detrimental to the league, Peek said that he was simply stating a fact.
The 6'4" Peek was the third overall pick by Pop Cola back in 1998, having played for five different teams, including the Alaska Aces, Coca-Cola Tigers, and Sta. Lucia Realtors.
The 39-year-old has career averages of 11.57 points, 7.95 rebounds, 1.04 assists and 1.21 blocks. He announced his retirement from basetball in February 2014.
Meanwhile, TNT Tropang Giga forward Kelly Williams also posted his agreement with Ildefonso’s remark, commenting "yup" on Peek’s post using his Kel Williams Facebook Fan account.
Several of Peek’s followers also expressed their agreement with Ildefonso’s controversial comment.
"Ganun pala ‘yun… tell the truth and you’ll be fined… pulpol talaga tong si Marcial na tuta ni long hair," said Ron Yu.
"Truth hurts for PBA," commented Rodolfo Ganuhay Avenido Jr.
"Yes idol… truth never lies," according to Joseph Carolino Romero.
"Danny I. for points!!" wrote Eric Reyes Javana.
Ildefonso made the controversial "farm team" comment in response to two netizens urging the PBA to ban his son, Dave, for reportedly refusing a rookie deal offered by the Batang Pier.
Basketball fans have labeled the Batang Pier as a "farm team" for San Miguel Corporation due to their tendency to trade key players to the San Miguel Beermen, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, or Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots.
