Getting drafted in the PBA alone entails a lot of pressure. But for Kurt Reyson, the pressure is even greater after joining the Meralco Bolts, who just won their first-ever championship in the PBA Philippine Cup.
The former Letran guard was taken 23rd overall in the second round of the 2024 PBA Draft last 14 July.
"I got picked by the defending champion and it feels double pressure," said Reyson in Filipino at Glorietta Activity Center.
"Meralco has a lot of scorers already, they’re loaded. So I’ll just do what they want me to, even in defense, I’ll just follow it."
Aside from Reyson, the Bolts also took former University of the Philippines guard CJ Cansino in the first round.
Reyson is currently averaging 8.7 points, the team’s fourth leading scorer behind Justin Baltazar, Archie Concepcion, and Encho Serrano, to go along with 4.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists for the Giant Lanterns in the MPBL.
Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin had nothing but praise for Letran star Kurt Reyson following his outstanding performance against the Blue Eagles in the SBP Invitational Games last June 2023.
Reyson took charge for the Knights, scoring a game-high 25 points on a 9-of-22 shooting clip. He also contributed five rebounds and three assists. However, despite Reyson’s efforts, the NCAA champion squad faltered down the stretch as the UAAP kings staged a come-from-behind 90-85 victory.
"Reyson’s a hell of a player and he had a really good game and we knew that they would go to him," said Baldwin.
