Meralco Will Miss Almazan For Five Weeks

Raymond Almazan
With most of the big and dominating players out due to injuries, Meralco Bolts was expected to fare well in the upcoming PBA Philippine Cup. Unfortunately, Raymond Almazan will still be out for at least five more weeks due to the knee injury he suffered last January in the PBA Governors' Cup Finals.

Meralco coach Norman Black said Almazan is still recovering from the lateral meniscus tear on his left knee which he suffered during Game Three of the Governors' Cup Finals against Barangay Ginebra.

"The initial diagnosis was he would be out for 10 weeks. He's already been out for five. We are thinking that he will be back in five weeks, ready to play," said Black to Spin.ph.

Almazan's arrival late last season has finally given Meralco the big man it has long needed, but the long-term injury leaves the Bolts with a big hole in the middle in the early stages of the season.

"It's going to be challenging again. It’s the all-Filipino. We were hoping that with the addition of Raymond Almazan that our all-Filipinos will be a lot better because he gives us a lot of size. He is going to be out for at least five weeks. We will just try to hold the fort until he can get back," said Black.

The Bolts had an extensive break following their finals series against Barangay Ginebra, but Black is confident that they can get back into top form immediately.

"We've been back for two weeks now. We will have a scrimmage game to try to find out where we are right now. We are still missing some key players but the guys in practice, they’ve been playing very well," said Black.
