Black, Canete Signed 1-Year Deal With Bolts

Aaron Black
Aaron Black and Michael Canete can now heave a sigh of relief and rest until coronavirus goes away knowing that they are now part of the Meralco Bolts.

The team completed its 15-man roster by signing up rookie draftees Black and Canete to fill in the two remaining spots in their lineup for the season-opening Philippine Cup.

Team manager Paolo Trillo disclosed the two were signed to a one-year deal each on 10 March, or a day before the league decided to shut down the young season in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Black, the 23-tear old son of Meralco coach Norman Black, was picked in second round (18th overall) in last year’s draft, while Canete was a third-round selection at No. 29.

The deal made the Blacks the first father and son to be together under one franchise since former MVP and coach Ato Agustin handled rookie son Marc Agustin at Petron during the 2012 Commissioner’s Cup.

Black has been dominating the amateur ranks, putting up solid numbers for the Capitals and dropping triple-doubles with AMA in the PBA D-League after he skipped his final year at Ateneo. He became only the third player in the developmental league's history to rack up multiple triple-doubles after Mike Tolomia (twice) and Jeron Teng (thrice).

Canete, on the other hand, proved that he can put up significant numbers for Arellano University in the NCAA after finishing with a career-best 27 points to go along 10 rebounds in their narrow 84-79 win over Emilio Aguinaldo College on a crucial game in 2017. After that, he became a permanent fixture for the Bacoor Strikers in the MPBL.

Canete, a 6-foot-4 forward, can play the stretch four position for the Bolts. His versatility could allow him to play both the forward spots for the squad which has now become smaller with the injury to Raymond Almazan.
