After missing last year's Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) rookie selection because of his lack of D-League experience, Jonathan Grey doesn't mind being drafted 7th overall by the Meralco Bolts in the first round of the regular round for the non-Gilas players.
Scouts and coaches are pegging him as one of the top selections in this year’s rookie class.
Though he is humbled by the expectations, what’s important for the former St. Benilde star is to get his chance in the pro league.
The 24-year old slasher is also thankful to new Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia, who coached him in the PBA D-League with Racal, for the guidance entering the draft.
More than his scoring, Grey wants show the Bolts his ability to adjust what his coaches need from him.
"Bukod sa scoring, team player din ako na kaya mag-defense at pumasa," he said in an interview with Inquirer.net.
As one of the newest member of the Bolts, the 6-foot-2 former College of St. Benilde Blazer said he will have to bear a lot of responsibility as a rookie in a team fresh from finishing second in the PBA Governors' Cup.
Grey said he is to looking forward to having Jimmy Alapag as a teammate and Norman Black as his head coach.
Grey said he hopes to continue to contribute with his offensive skills, but also looks forward to learn new things from a team that works as a team.
"Team talaga 'yung Meralco kaya excited ako. Marami akong matututunan," said Grey.
