The two expansion teams in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) have several reasons to be happy when they take turn picking from a list of unprotected players. Aside from the decision of NLEX to use another option to enter the league, which means they will not pick from the dispersal draft, both Kia Motors and Blackwater Sports were blessed with some prominent names in the list.
Heading the list is veteran center and former Meralco Bolts, Danny Ildefonso. The two time Most Valuable Player (MVP), was one of the league’s biggest stars since the late nineties who helped San Miguel Beer to eight championships in a 15-year stint with the team.
However, the 37-year old former National University star has seen little playing time since moving to Meralco last season, averaging just 3.10 points and 2.19 rebounds in 12.33 minutes of action.
Aside from Ildefonso, the Rain or Shine Elastopainters will also be doing the two expansion teams a favor by dropping rookie Alex Nuyles and back-up center Larry Rodriguez from its protected list. The hard-charging Nuyles was a first-round pick of Rain or Shine at ninth overall in last season's draft and made quite an impression in the limited minutes he got off the bench - the reason the former Adamson Falcons star's presence in the pool readily stirred excitement from Blackwater owner Dioceldo Sy
"The dispersal draft suddenly became exciting," said Sy.
On the other hand, Rodriguez was a late-blooming big man who shone while playing behind Beau Belga for much of last season, especially after JR Quinahan's season was ended by a knee injury.
Also expected to picked early is San Mig Coffee's Ronnie Matias. Picked 8th in 2009 by the defunct Burger King Whoopers, the former star player of University of Manila (UM) has been with three different teams already before settling with the Mixers.
A known defender with sweet-shooting from beyond the arc, Matias lost his spot in the rotation in the deep roster of Coach Tim Cone.
Columbian Autocar Corp. president Ginia Domingo is also optimistic the bumper crop of talent in the dispersal pool will be more than enough to give Kia the opportunity to build a good team.
"We may not be able to build a champion team this year but with the roster that we can choose from, pwede naman kami lumaban. Hopefully we get the players we want during the dispersal draft," Domingo said of the event set on 18 July 2014 at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City.
