It is now official. Jimmy Alapag has unretired himself, joined the national team and is now a Meralco Bolts point-guard after a three-team trade.
Initially thought of as a rumor, the PBA Commissioner's Office just approved a deal that would send the 36-year old long-time Talk N' Text player to the Bolts. Meralco will send Mike Cortez and James Sena to the Blackwater Elites, which in turn will send Larry Rodriguez to the Texters.
Blackwater's participation in the trade was necessary since the PBA bars sister teams like Talk 'N Text and Meralco from making direct trades.
Alapag, who retired in February, has resumed practices with Gilas Pilipinas in a bid to shore up a national team backcourt that had been hit by withdrawals of targeted players like Ginebra's LA Tenorio.
Sources from the PLDT camp confirmed the trade, which was first reported by Interaksyon, has already been approved by the PBA but the league didn't make the official announcement until last 7 August.
What can Alapag bring to the tables of the Bolts? The 'Mighty Mouse' can serve both as a stabilizing factor for the backcourt and a mentor to young players.
"Jimmy has a lot left in the tank," said coach Norman Black. "He'll play a dual role for us, giving us a lot of leadership in the backcourt while serving as mentor to our young players."
The negative side is that, Alapag's transfer to the Bolts may hinder the development of young point guards that the team may choose from the draft.
Also, fans does not take kindly that they were duped by this misrepresentation from Alapag. The Bolts may have to work overtime to repair this public relation nightmare.
