The Meralco Bolts continue to show a lot of promises during their preseason games as they now sport a 3-0 record. Their latest victim is the hapless and struggling Barangay Ginebra during the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Liga ng Bayan game last 5 October 2014 in Panabo City, Davao del Norte.
With the veteran Reynel Hugnatan and the sweet-shooting John Wilson leading the charge, the Bolts had a very easy win against the Kings in route to an inspiring 91-79 score.
The Bolts appear revitalized under new coach Norman Black with Wilson getting Best Player of the Game honors after scoring 18 points and Hugnatan chipping in with 15. Wilson's impressive scoring included back-to-back baskets in the fourth period that led to a Meralco breakaway.
Wilson, who played a few years as part of the Gin Kings, was a steady presence all game long. His back-to-back baskets gave the Bolts an 86-77 lead with 3:28 left, allowing his team to pull away from a tight endgame.
The Bolts played with several new recruits in their line up, including Sean Anthony, Simon Atkins, Ryan Buenafe, Philip Morrison and John Ferriols among others.
Meralco was able to do their homework and executed near flawlessly by taking advantage of the absence of Ginebra sophomore slotman Greg Slaughter, out with an ankle sprain. Kings rookie forward Rodney Brondial, Japeth Aguilar and LA Tenorio did not play, but so did the Bolts explosive trio of Mike Cortez, Gary David and Jared Dillinger.
Fil-American Cliff Hodge added 13, Rey Guevarra had 11, while Anthony chipped in 10 for the Bolts, who are out to improve this time under Black after ending with a pair of ninth place finishes and a seventh place last season.
Meralco's impressive performance in the preseason included a win against Barako Bull and another win against the Kings in a mini tournament in Cebu a few weeks ago.
