If you expect to see the regular schedule of the PBA for the two remaining conferences, then you may want to brace yourself.
After listening to a presentation from Philippine national men’s basketball coach Chot Reyes on Thursday, the PBA has decided to compress its season to give more time for Gilas Pilipinas to train for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
"The PBA, the team owners, and the Governors have agreed to compress the current season, shortening it from the original 13 August finish to as early as 15 July," said PBA commissioner Chito Salud.
"How do we do that? We're going the make the second and third conference finals series both best-of-five."
Apart from shortening the current season, the PBA also moved the opening of the next season later to 19 October.
Reyes welcomed the development as the new schedule would allow the national team to represent the country not just in the World Cup, but also in the Asian Games in Incheo, South Korea.
"The board reiterated their full support to the Gilas program and they have very generously cut back the schedule by one month," said Reyes, who piloted the team to a silver medal finish in the FIBA Asia Championship last year to book their World Cup ticket.
"They also assured me that if there are other additional players that I would require that they would take it to their respective owners and that they can be considered to be part of the pool for the Gilas team."
Gilas will convene for its first weekly practice on the first Monday of March, after the end of the PLDT Home DSL Philippine Cup finals.
