Macmac Cardona got his numbers against his former team, but Talk 'N Text still managed to pull off a 92-84 win over Meralco on Friday night at the Astrodome in Pasay City to stay unbeaten in the PBA Philippine Cup.
Cardona led the Bolts with 15 points and sparked a late rally by the rookie franchise from 13 points down, only to be turned back in the stretch by Larry Fonacier's booming triple and four straight free throws courtesy of Ali Peek and Jimmy Alapag.
Fonacier, acquired by the Tropang Texters in the off-season from Alaska, led all Talk 'N Text scorers with 20 points, while Kelly Williams, Peek, and Ryan Reyes added 13, 12 and 10 each, respectively.
The Tropang Texters' third straight win tied them anew on top of the standings with reigning Fiesta Cup champions Alaska, an 88-80 winner over Rain or Shine.
Asi Taulava scored 15 points and three others also finished in double figures for the Bolts, who tumbled to their second straight loss following a surprising 73-72 squeaker over Barangay Ginebra on the conference's opening day.
Meralco trailed by as many as 13 points several times in the final quarter, the last at 85-72 after a Jason Castro three-pointer.
But the Bolts sprang back to life, scoring seven unanswered points, which Cardona capped with a big trey to trim it to 85-79 with 1:43 left.
After the Tropang Texters sued for timeout, Fonacier hit the backbreaking three-pointer that signaled Meralco's doom.
