Bolts 109, FiberXers 88

Meralco vs Converge
The Meralco Bolts showed no signs of any rust as they turned on full power en route to a runaway 109-88 opening victory over Converge in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup at Ynares Center in Antipolo last 18 March.

Import Marvin Jones joined forces with red-hot CJ Cansino and the ever-reliable Chris Newsome at the tip of the Bolts’ assault to turn the game around and win big after trailing by nine in the first.

Jones dropped a game-high 29 and collared eight rebounds in his PBA debut while Cansino rifled in 23 spiked by a perfect 2-of-2 marksmanship from the four-point arc and a near-flawless 3-of-4 clip from three-point line in a strong opening performance.

Newsome shot 19 in the 21-point romp that marked Meralco’s 300th win in franchise history.

The FiberXers, who missed Juan Gomez de Liano due to right knee bone contusion, fell to their second consecutive loss on the heels of their 100-111 overtime defeat to Terrafirma last Saturday for 1-2 overall.

"Compliments to Marvin, our import, he played well, CJ was on fire, New played well. Just overall, everybody that got fielded today was able to contribute," said Meralco coach Luigi Trillo.

The Bolts unleashed a 26-18 salvo in the second and 31-20 blast in the second and third to wrest control. The FiberXers managed to threaten to within nine after facing a 20-point gap but Cansino dropped his two four-balls surrounded by threes from Jones and Newsome to get Meralco out of danger zone.

"Those first games they’re not written in stone, it’s not 100 percent we’re in our flow. But I think we did better, we defended better, we moved the ball better and in the fourth quarter when they threw the zone, we were patient and moved the ball around," said Trillo.
