There were two California high school basketball players that just set mind-bongling records last 23 January that many would usually see on a video game.
Mesrobian High School senior guards Nick and Dylan Khatchikian went off in a 119-25 victory over Pasadena's Waverly High. Nick scored 102 points, and Dylan had a triple-double for Mesrobian in Pico Rivera, California.
Nick's 102 points came on 48-of-60 shooting from the field in only 22 minutes and also set a new California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state record.
The brothers played most of the third quarter, then posed for pictures afterward. Nick’s holding a piece of paper with "102" on it, an echo — there’s that word again — to Philadelphia Warriors star Wilt Chamberlain’s famous pictorial celebration after he scored 100 points against the Knicks in 1962. Dylan's holding a piece of paper with "35 ast" on it.
The Khatchikian brothers did their thing against kids from The Waverly School, which has lost all nine games — scores include 71-9, 79-13 and 65-14 — with a roster featuring four sophomores and two freshmen, all fulfilling their P.E. requirements, all competing for a program with a "focus on maximizing the participation of all team members".
The previous state record was set by Tigran Grigoryan of Mesrobian in 2003. Grigoryan is now an assistant coach with the team.
Dylan Khatchikian channeled his inner Oscar Robertson with a 35-assist, 15 rebound, and 13 steal effort. The 35 assists are also a state record.
Nick Khatchikian scored all of his team's points in the first half. Mesrobian led 79-0 at the break.
