Back Spasm and Its Effect on Raymond Almazan

Raymund Almazan
The Meralco Bolts are standing on a 3 wins 1 loss record right now despites missing several key players like Raymond Almazan and Allein Maliksi.

Import Allen Durham provides a big force for the Bolts in the shaded lane right now. Kyle Pascual and Brandon Bates are also providing big help in reboundng and blocking shots to complement the renewed offensive prowess of Chris Banchero.

However, their efforts will not be sustainable without the inside presence of Almazan, who is still struggling with a painful back spasms. But what is really a back spasm?

This is usually a spasm in the back muscles which is a common type of back pain. They can be tiny twinges or crippling contractions. At-home treatments like ice and heat can help, as can muscle relaxants, massages, stretches and consistent exercise. Sometimes back spasms can be a sign of a serious disorder and this could be why Slmazan is taking some time before going back to court.

There are a number of possible causes for back spasms:

  1. Not using your muscles enough. If you sit too much, have poor posture, don’t exercise or rarely use your back or stomach muscles, those muscles can get weak and spasm.
  2. Using your muscles too much. Athletes and those who do a lot of heavy lifting may experience back spasms. Such activities can cause a muscle strain, which is a tear, and that can cause inflammation.
  3. Dietary issues. Back spasms can be caused by too little water, potassium and/or calcium in your diet.
  4. Mental/emotional health issues. Anxiety and stress can tense up your muscles.
  5. Trauma. You may injure your back in a fall or car accident.
Sometimes, your back spasms may mean that you have a serious condition, including:

  • Epidural abscess.
  • Gallstones.
  • Stiff person syndrome.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Kidney stones.
  • Kidney infection.
  • Tumor.
