It wasn't a completely bad day for the Meralco Bolts, after all. Hours after losing a key player in Jared Dillinger, the Bolts were all business, edging Rain or Shine 91-84 in the PBA Commissioner's Cup on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Bolts relegated injured Dillinger to the unrestricted free agent list with a verbal agreement that he wouldn't sign with any team. But without consulting any of the Meralco officials, Dillinger signed with Ginebra last 31 May.
Black thanked Dillinger for his services, adding the decision was his prerogative.
As disappointing as this development was, Meralco is moving on from it, starting by hacking out its second victory in four games in the mid-season conference.
Meralco head coach Norman Black praised the locals for stepping up but it was import Gani Lawal who led the way with 19 points including the two free throws that sealed the game.
It was Nico Salva's baseline jumper with 1:09 remaining that proved to be the dagger, 89-84.
"It was a tough game. I was very happy we played defense tonight. Basically it all started with our transition defense," Black said during the post-game interview.
"I thought our local players did a good job tonight. Hats off to my local players for standing up."
The win spoiled the debut of returning import Denzel Bowles, who finished with 31 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks.
