Meralco Bolts fans still remembered the former Best Import Arinze Onuaku for the mid-season conference who almost carried them to the finals two years ago, The burly 6-foot-9, ex-Syracuse stalwart, will be back.
Team manager Paolo Trillo confirmed a few days ago to Spin.ph that they signed the 30-year-old Maryland native, who had previous stints with NBA teams New Orleans, Minnesota, and Orlando.
Onuaku has undoubtedly played a big role for the Bolts, helping the 7-year-old PBA franchise improve from last place in the 2016 Philippine Cup to the no. 1-ranked squad entering the Commissioner's Cup playoffs.
Meralco struggled so much in the paint that they were the worst rebounding team in the Philippine Cup two years ago, grabbing just 44.2 rebounds per game. That all changed with the entry of Onuaku.
Onuaku immediately made his presence felt for Meralco, averaging 20 points, 17.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks, while he led the league in field goal percentage after getting majority of his shots near the basket. The Bolts immediately started the conference 5-0. He remained steady all throughout the remainder of the elimination round as Meralco rose to the top seed with an 8-3 slate.
In July 2016, Onuaku joined the Orlando Magic white team for the 2016 Orlando Summer League. On September 2016, he signed with the Magic, but was waived later after appearing in eight games.
On 8 June 2017, Onuaku signed with Hunan of China for the 2017 NBL season.
