PotW: Chris Newsome Is Rookie No More

Chris Newsome
Reigning PBA Rookie of the Year Chris Newsome showed that he is already in playoff mode after tallying all-around numbers in Meralco's last two games to help the Bolts seal the top seed in the PBA Governors' Cup playoffs.

Newsome averaged 21 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.0 steal in their past two games to tow Meralco past GlobalPort and Grand Slam-seeking San Miguel, as the Bolts ended the elimination round with a 9-2 win-loss record.

He was instrumental in Meralco's 100-93 win over GlobalPort, tallying 28 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

Two days later, he made seven of his 10 field goals for 14 points, then added six assists and four boards as Meralco stunned San Miguel in come-from-behind fashion, 104-101.

With his effort, Newsome earned the PBA Press Corps Player of the Week award for the period of September 18-24, besting Star veterans Mark Barroca and PJ Simon, and the Rain or Shine trio of Raymond Almazan, Maverick Ahanmisi, and Don Trollano.

The Bolts, with their twice-to-beat edge, only need to beat eighth-seeded Blackwater Elite on 26 September in order to advance to the semifinals.
