After Blackwater Elite's 118-107 win over the hapless GlobalPort Batang Pier last 17 September, the official 8-team cast for the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor’s Cup playoff is complete.
Those that have assured themselves of a quarterfinal slot are Barangay Ginebra, Meralco Bolts, NLEX Road Warriors, TNT KaTropa, San Miguel Beermen, Star Hotshots, Rain or Shine Elastopainters and Blackwater.
Four teams that were eliminated by virtue of last Sunday’s win are Kia Picanto, Phoenix Fuel Masters, Alaska Aces and GlobalPort.
What remains to be decided are the final standings and who will be part of the top four which will include a twice-to-beat advantage.
However, this does not mean that the remaining games will be uninteresting. In fact, whoever arranged the schedule should be commended because all games at this point have a great impact in the overall picture. Eliminated teams may still play an important role as spoilers if they strive to win their remaining games.
What is also possible, remotely it may be, is that all top teams end their campaign with an 8-3 card. This is possible only if TNT, San Miguel and NLEX beat their remaining opponents, while Meralco splits its games and Barangay Ginebra loses their final game.
In the event that a 5-way tie occurs, the PBA will have to resort to a very complicated quotient system that will probably disappoint many of their fans.
In any case, for Meralco to avoid any complications, they should strive to win their last two games against GlobalPort and San Miguel.
