Anybody still remember ex-Meralco Bolts resident import, Champ Oguchi? The Nigerian player was just named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2015 Afrobasket.
What is more important is that Nigeria earned a ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil after they defeated rival Angola, 74-65, in the finals.
Oguchi averaged 16.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists throughout the competition. He scored a game-high 19 points along with 17 rebounds in the championship game.
The 6-foot-6 swingman also led the tournament’s Mythical Five that also featured Carlos Morais of Angola, Makrem Ben Romdhane of Tunisia, and NBA players Gorgui Dieng of Senegal and Al Farouq Aminu of Nigeria.
It marked the second time that Nigeria qualified for the Olympics after its debut in 2012. A year before that, Oguchi suited up for the Bolts and played parts of the 2011 Commissioner’s Cup and the 2011 Governors’ Cup where he averaged 28.3 points and 10.3 rebounds over 11 games.
The sharpshooting former Illinois State product also made an average of 4.2 three-pointers per game on 40.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc in his first PBA stint.
