There may be an initial confusion on what network will be covering Gilas Pilipinas' participation in the FIBA World Cup in Spain after both TV5 and rival ABS-CBN announced that they will be broadcasting the games. Confusion also reigned on social media sites over the airing of games starting 30 August 30 until 14 September.
However, information shows that Solar owns the local rights to all FIBA-run tournaments. Moreover, Solar Entertainment's Basketball TV and Solar Sports will air the games officially on cable television.
The confusion started when Solar granted some of the rights to both TV5 and ABS-CBN.
Solar has struck a deal with Sports5, the sports arm of TV5 which is incidentally headed by Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes. Under the deal, Sports5 will now have the rights to broadcast live all the games of Gilas, either on TV5 or its sister channel on the UHF band AksyonTV 41, for the duration of the Spain showpiece.
Solar also granted ABS-CBN the rights to broadcast the games from the World Cup, both on Channel 2 and UHF channel ABC-CBN Sports + Action, but with different conditions. ABS-CBN will only be allowed to air live all the other matches of the World Cup not involving the Gilas team. Coverage of Gilas game can still be aired by ABS-CBN, but on a delayed basis.
Coach Reyes and his resilient 12-man army bannered by naturalized player Andray Blatche will have no less than world power Croatia for their first opponent in the world championship. The Croatians are considered a tough team after as they made it to the round of 16 during the 2010 edition of the meet in Istanbul, Turkey.
