The Meralco Bolts just brought in the burly Darnell Edred Jackson despite the good showing of Brian Butch. The reason for this is not clear, but there are some who believe that it was an insurance move just in case the 6'9" Butch gets injured or fails to sustain his good numbers.
The problem is that Jackson knows how to play hard to get. It was reported that he doesn't want to attend any practice of the Bolts unless they ditch Butch as an import. This move was not loss to the Barangay Ginebra management who were quick to the draw after it was rumored that they are trying to lure the 28-year old Jackson to their stable as a possible replacement for Leon Rodgers. Gabe Freeman was also considered, but no word yet from the prolific forward.
What will happen in the next couple of days will be interesting because of this, but for now we'll try to see who really is Darnel Jackson.
Jackson played for the University of Kansas in college for four seasons, including the 2008 national championship team. He did not become a regular starter at Kansas until the 2007–08 season (his senior year), when he replaced Sasha Kaun in the starting lineup.
Jackson, who did not begin playing basketball until the ninth grade, was considered as one of the most improved players in the U.S. after averaging 6.7 rebounds during his senior season in 2007-08. After his breakout performances, including a 25-point, 9-rebound effort against Boston College, several NBA scouts took notice of the Kansas native.
During Jackson's sophomore year in 2005, the 265-lbs power-forward was suspended for nine games for allegedly accepting payments from Kansas booster Don Davis, a family friend. His life further took turns for the worse after his grandmother had been killed by a drunk driver on that same year. Jackson was close to his grandmother and if was reported that he usually thumped his chest three times after scoring to symbolically honor his grandmother, his mother and Davis.
In 2008, Jackson played a big role in the Jayhawks' championship season, leading the team in rebounds and shooting percentage.
Jackson was selected as the 52nd overall pick in the 2008 National Basketball Association (NBA) Draft by the Miami Heat before he was traded to the Cavaliers on that same day. Interestingly, Sasha Kaun, his former Jayhawks teammate and fellow 2008 draft pick, was also acquired by the Cavaliers (from the Seattle Sonics).
Jackson played for the Cavaliers during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Nevada and average 5.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in 24.6 minutes per game.
Even before the 2008–09 season can begin, Jackson broke his wrist and was relegated to the inactive list for the first 13 games of the Cavaliers' regular season. He made his professional debut on 25 November 2008 against the New York Knicks where he scored four points on a perfect 2-2 from the field and grabbed two rebounds.
Jackson was later assigned by the Cavaliers to their affiliate D-League team, the Erie Bayhawks for one game before being recalled back to the Cavaliers, a day later. In his very short stint with the Erie, Jackson scored a game-high 24 points (on 10-of-14 field goals) in 26 minutes in a 101–89 win over Utah.
After he was waived by the Cavaliers, Jackson was claimed by the Milwaukee Bucks before he was sent to Sacramento Kings in a trade for forward Jon Brockman. His journeyman duty earned him a spot with the BC Donetsk of the Ukrainian Basketball Super League, Reno Bighorns in the NBA D-League and even with Chinese league.
He had a one-month contract with the Indiana Pacers way back in 2013 before he was waived. He signed with the Shanghai Sharks of China later that year.
In his close to four seasons with the NBA, Jackson tumultuous journey earned him an average of 2.2 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game despite shooting 45.0 percent from the floor. He fared better in his Chinese sojourn where he played 35 games and average a decent 22.0 points, 11.2 rebounds and 1.2 assist per game. His shooting also climbed to about 52.3 percent from the floor.
