According to NBA Philippines, when the NBA Global Games Philippines 2013 takes place in Manila this October, the Houston Rockets and the Indiana Pacers, their coaching staffs, dance teams, retinue and NBA media won't be the only NBA personalities in town. NBA Legends will add a distinct twinkle to the NBA extravaganza as well.
Three Legends – Clyde "The Glide" Drexler, a fomer Portland Trailblazer and Houtson Rocket; Robert Horry, an NBA champion who won his rings on three different teams (the Houston Rockets, the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs); and Jalen Rose, who played alongside Reggie Miller on the Indiana Pacers – will be in Manila for the NBA Global Games as well. Drexler and Horry, who have been to the Philippines before as part of NBA Madness 2011 and the NBA Asia Challenge 2010, respectively, and Rose, will be veritable NBA Global Games ambassadors to the country.
Horry is looking forward to his second trip to Manila. "The fans are very passionate about the game. I've been very, very fortunate to travel to a bunch of places and experience different cultures. And everyone has that love for you. Even though sometimes they don't know who you are, they know the NBA; they know the NBA brand and they come out and support it because they know it’s going to be a fun-filled event. It's just a wonderful feeling to still be associated with the NBA even though you’re not playing," he said.
Jalen Rose noted how the fans’ knowledge of the game was advanced, "[how] they truly craved and supported NBA basketball".
In other parts of the world that will be hosting their own NBA Global Games, NBA Legends will be veritable ambassadors for the game as well, part and parcel of the scenario and living proof of the brotherhood and sense of community among NBA talents through the decades.
The NBA has been staging games outside of the U.S. since 1978. The 2013-14 season, however, will have the most number of NBA teams and players playing internationally in a single season. The full 2013-14 NBA Global Games includes a total of 12 NBA teams playing 10 regular season and preseason games in 10 cities in seven countries and territories. This will be the most number of NBA teams to play internationally in a single season in the history of the league.
After the 10 October 2013 game between the Houston Rockets and the Indiana Pacers at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, the two teams, their entourage and the NBA Legends will fly to Taipei to prepare for NBA Global Games Taipei 2013 on 13 October.
