I just received a fresh report from the PBA Commissioner's Office regarding their decision on how to deal with Petron Blaze import Renaldo Balkman after he had a meltdown at the end of the Boosters' loss to the Alaska Aces last 8 March 2013.
Commissioner Rudy Salud has just meted a lifetime ban on the former NY Knicks player and ordered him to pay PhP 250,000.00 in fine.
Before the final buzzer signaled the end of the game, Balkman confronted the referees, shoving away teammate Ronald Tubid and Assistant Coach Biboy Ravanes, before getting into a tussle with Petron co-captain Arwind Santos.
The bizarre episode saw Balkman grabbing at Santos’ neck before the two men were separated by teammates.
Last week, Petron Blaze import Renaldo Balkman was being tagged as the early favorite for the Best Import award in the Commissioner’s Cup. Now, his future crumbled.
Before the decision on his action was made, Balkman met with Commisioner Chito Salud.
"I knew I messed up," Balkman said during a press conference at the PBA office shortly after his meeting. "But I'm ready to face the consequences of my action."
"He said a lot of things," said Balkman about his meeting with Salud. "He was right and I knew as role model of my team that I was wrong."
Balkman's teammates, coaches and members of the team management were there during the press conference to give him full support, all of them hoping the import will be given a second chance.
"We're here to support our teammate and import Renaldo Balkman and we want to see him given a second chance," said Petron coach Olsen Racela.
Coach Racela said he could only speak on the team's behalf, but added the team would abide by the decision of the Commissioner.
"Whatever the decision of the commissioner is, then we will respect that," added Racela.
Racela added that San Miguel Corporation is also set to impose its own sanction for Balkman’s actions.
