Behind a strong start and a stronger finish, Barangay Ginebra stopped Meralco on its tracks in the PBA Governors Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Friday night (24 June 2011).
The Kings outplayed the Bolts in the opening quarter and at the finish for a 97-81 rout and a piece of third place after their first three games in the season-ending tourney.
After two near triple-double games, Curtis Stinson finally completed one with 18 points, 16 assists and 13 rebounds as the Kings bounced back from a loss to the Petron Boosters the last time out and, in the process, caught up with the Bolts at 2-1.
Mark Caguioa and Ronald Tubid contributed 25 and 17 points, respectively, as the Kings scored the in priming themselves up for their Dubai game with the Talk n Text Tropang Texters on 1 July 2011.
"Hopefully, we're able to get the right flow of the game, right rotation and the right way to play going to our next game," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.
"Our team short as it is, we really have to find the right way to battle the bigger teams,"Uichico added.
Obviously, the Kings dealt with these concerns correctly versus the Bolts.
Stinson and his teammates established control early and pushed the right buttons with Bolts waging a rally at the finish.
After the Bolts came within four at 77-81, Stinson, Caguioa and Tubid teamed up in a nine-to-nothing
run as the Kings regained a double-digit spread at 90-77.
Stinson had amassed solid all-around numbers of 10 points, nine assists and eight rebounds by the half.
Stinson and Caguioa got Ginebra to a good start with 10 points apiece in the opening quarter then Tubid took over as the Kings sat on a 53-40 cushion at halftime.
The two teams figured in a highly physical game marked by the ejection by Erick Rodriguez in the second period on a flagrant foul on Gabby Espinas.
Earlier, JC Intal drew an Espinas swing on his chin.
