Now that the Meralco Bolts will not be able to tap Rashawn Thomas as import in the PBA 2024-2025 Commissioner's Cup, the team should act fast. The tournament will start on 27 November and, so far, their no names being floated for the Bolts.
The rumor inside the team suggests that some staff are trying to find out if former import Jessie Govan is available and willing to play with the team again.
During the 2022 PBA Commissioner's Cup, Meralco signed Govan to replace Johnny O’Bryant. However, the 27-year old was deemed ineligible to play in the conference as he was measured above the 6'10" height limit. The 2024-2025 version of the tournament imposed no height restrictions.
Govan was undrafted in the NBA after playing for the Hoyas from 2015-2019, where he was named All-Big East Freshman Team after leading his team in blocks. In his junior year, Govan had 17.9 points and 10 rebounds during the 2017-2018 season, the first time in 15 years that a Hoya averaged a double-double.
He did play in the Asian circuit, suiting up for the San-en NeoPhoenix, Kyoto Hannaryz in the Japan B League and Seoul Samsung Thunders in the Korean Basketball League.
He also had stints with the NBA G League Ignite.
The 6-foot-11 center is currently paying for Ostioneros De Guaymas in the Mexican CIBACOPA, where he averaged 4.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. His freethrow shooting percentage, though, is only 30 percent.
