San Miguel Is Motivated In Facing Meralco

The Meralco Bolts and the San Miguel Beermen are set to face in the PBA Philippine Cup playoffs once again. This is match similar to Season 48 where the two powerhouse squads are set to lock horns in the postseason. This time around, however, it will not be in the Finals but in the quarterfinals stage.

At the end of Season 49’s All-Filipino elimination round, San Miguel sits at No.1 with a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarters, while Meralco is at No.8 with a 6-5 record.

It's down to the final four teams and its a battle between sister teams. Barangay Ginebra already took Game 1 in their best-of-five series against San Miguel, while Meralco Bolts and Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters will have their baptism later in the evening (27 September).

The Bolts and the Texters are familiar with each other than most people think mainly because they have players and coaches who have played on both sides, and that adds a lot of potentially dramatic flavor to this match up. Among these are Jimmy Alapag, Jared Dillinger, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Jai Reyes, and, of course, coaches Norman Black and Jong Uichico.

In the last ten days, the Meralco Bolts defeated the Mahindra Enforcers to claim the No. 4 spot and last twice-to-beat advantage. However, it doesn't mean anything if considering that the average margin is only 3.5 on both those games.

Having the same record of 6 wins and 5 losses means that both teams are assured to meet again regardless of who wins. The only difference is that Meralco only need to win one more, while Mahindra needs to win meet again on Saturday (24 September) to force a winner-take-all affair.

The Meralco Bolts continue their unbelievable winning run and stretch it to five after surviving a gritty GlobalPort Batang Pier last 28 February. Standing in their way from achieving a franchise-best six-game winning streak is the All-Filipino champion San Miguel Beermen, which they will face on 5 March in Legazpi City, Albay.

It can be recalled that during the same conference last year, the Bolts streaked to 5 wins with import Josh David anchoring their defense. They were poised to get their sixth win in a row, when they were thwarted by the Beermen in an out-of-town game in Cagayan De Oro last 21 February 2015. But it was a game marred by a sick attempt to take out Davis.

Meralco Bolts has three rookies in its roster a couple of returning and newly acquired semi veteran players. Can their fans expect more from them in the All-Filipino Conference.

The Meralco Bolts will get a big test on Wednesday, 4 April 2012, to see if they are ready for the PBA Semi-finals. The B-MEG Llamados are undoubtedly among basketball's best and will be out to prove there is not a single team they cannot beat.

Bolts has certainly had their struggles this season but is coming together when it matters most, but in order to be considered a serious contender for a championship this season, a second win against Llamados is necessary to prove to themselves and naysayers that they have what it takes.

The Meralco Bolts are slowly proving that they have what it takes to make a legitimate run at a PBA championship this season before the team as we know and love are broken up and rebuild next season to give way to the influx of talented pool of rookies. They just eliminated the Powerade Tigers in a close match-up by silencing the guns of Gary David, the league's highest scoring local.

The B-MEG Llalmados should prove to be a suitable opponent before they entertain any idea of advancing to the semifinal round against crowd favorite Ginebra Kings. If B-MEG's James Yap is on top of his game and Macmac Cardona along with Asi Taulava struggles, the best-of-three series can quickly go in a direction Bolts fans would not be happy to see.

The Meralco Bolts are silently gearing up for a slot in the quarterfinals in the on-going Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner Cup. While they have definitely had their fair share of bumps and bruises (sometimes quite literally) they have quietly earned themselves a 4-5 record and are looking to oust the Powerade Tigers for a shot at the next round.

For a brief period in the elimination round, it was questionable if the Bolts have chosen the right import for the job. Earl Barron failed to give the Bolts a win on his first game since coming back as an import, ironically, against the Tigers. The Bolts local crew did not fair better. Surely one or more of the core players was going to explode this time around. On who that would be will remain a question until the final whistle is blown.
