Gilas and PBA Lend a Hand

When natural disasters strike the country, trust Filipinos to bond together to help those in dire need.

Following days of rains dumped by the southwest monsoon and intensified by tropical storm Maring, victims saw and feel a lot of kindness from their fellow Filipinos.

Gilas Filipinas, fresh from an inspiring silver medal finish in the Asian cage meet, will take on a new role of raising funds to help in relief efforts. Both the players and coaching staff have already started putting in their contributions last 21 August 2013 through the Alagang Kapatid Foundation.

"It's time to give back," said coach Chot Reyes as he urged Gilas followers (@smartgilasph, @gilasarmy and @smartgilas) to also share their blessing to the less fortunate victims of flood and typhoons.

Gilas Pilipinas actually drew inspiration from the fans, who brave inclement weather and provided the much needed morale boost for the team’s quest for a berth in the next year’s World Basketball Championships.

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is also likely to respond to the needs of the victims after the league board convened in a meeting last 22 August 2013 in their office in Libis, Quezon City.

Last year, the PBA pooled about PhP 2 Million as seed money in a fund drive also for the victims of disaster.

"For sure, the PBA will help. And I won't be surprised if PBA member teams would have their own relief efforts," said PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial.
