Let's Run for Samboy Lim

Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) legend Samboy "The Skywalker" Lim suffered cardiac arrest during an exhibition basketball game at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig last November 2014. Simple critical medical procedures, such as bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), were not immediately administered because nobody in the gym knew how to perform it.

Lim was rushed to The Medical City where he was admitted without a pulse. It was estimated back then that Lim was deprived of oxygen for at least 23 minutes. He was revived by doctors and his body was placed in a state of therapeutic hypothermia for 48 hours to prevent a recurrence of seizures. Doctors said Lim was in alpha coma, meaning a high probability of never regaining consciousness, when brought to the hospital.

In December 2015, the player nicknamed the Skywalker opened his eye, and started mouthing words. However, a few weeks later, he suffered some deterioration in his motor functions, losing the ability to voluntarily move his lips. "The Skywalker" is now trying to recover at home with support from his ex-wife Atty. Darlene Marie Berberabe, his three children, their close families and friends.

From that time to the present, the Lim family received support from various individuals and companies that helped them defray the cost which runs up to millions of pesos.

Atty. Berberabe has also been raising funds for Lim as bills for the former basketball star's medical needs and therapy have begun to pile up. Despite many expressions of love and support for the stricken sports hero have continued to pour in, it is expected to be a long battle.

As a way of helping the Lim family, former actor-comedian Bearwin Meily’s RUNtarantantan organized the "SKYWALKERUN: A Run for Samboy Lim" set for 17 July at the Blue Bay Walk in Pasay City. Portion of the proceeds will be used to defray the cost of Lim's medical care, while the rest will used be to pay the investment cost.

Skywalkerun Medals
The event has three categories: 9K, 5K and 3K with finishers getting medals with the Skywalker’s likeness.

Participants will also wear a basketball jersey-styled singlet with Lim's trademark No. 9 that he wore in his playing days, notably with the San Miguel Beermen where he was an integral part of the 1989 PBA Grand Slam-winning squad.
