University of the Philippines Professor Martin Verdeprado Gregorio, the patriarch of basketball’s Gregorio clan, died in Quezon City last 2 February, his family said.

Professor Gregorio, who served as UP’s Vice-President for Administration as well as the Secretary of the University and of the Board of Regents, introduced the love for the sport in his family, including his sons, Patrick, Allan and Ryan, who all went on to play roles in the local basketball circuit.

"Papa Mart would usually bring us to the games at the Araneta Coliseum," Patrick said of his father.

"He is a Tanduay fan along with Ryan. Allan used to root for Crispa while I am a certified Big J (Robert Jaworski) and Toyota fan."

Patrick, commonly known as 'Pato', is currently TNT's representative to the PBA Board of Governors. He has served as the chairman of the PBA Board, as well, and a former executive director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the sport's governing body in the country.

Allan works as a sports anchor on a television network and is an assistant coach of the UP Fighting Maroons.

Ryan was a champion coach who helmed the Purefoods and Meralco franchises in the PBA. He is now the alternate board governor of the Bolts.

Professor Gregorio is survived by his wife Lucille; their children, Patrick, Allan, Cecile and Ryan; their respective families; and their grandchildren, Juan Paolo, Martin Raphael, Patricia Michaela, Jaime Martin, John Allan, Ysabelle Marie Briana, Angela Gabrielle, Andre Luis, Ramon Jose and Janna Marie.

One of their daughters, Marie Kristina 'Tin' Gregorio-Macadaeg, passed away a few years ago.

A memorial service will be held at the Sta. Maria Della Strada Church, Katipunan Road, Quezon City starting 3 February, at 6:00 P.M. until 6 February, at 11:30 A.M.

The family members have requested everyone to celebrate Professor Gregorio’s life by supporting the Professor Martin V. Gregorio UP Visayas Foundation for the benefit of poor and deserving high school students in Panay.
