How Long Should We Endure This Erratic Scheduling?

SMART-GILAS
The coverage of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) games faced several criticisms ever since the PBA Board of Governors and TV5 agreed to abide by the terms and provisions of the broadcast contract early last year. The major issue was their very confusing schedule and broadcasting format late last year which resulted in several mix-ups and disoriented the viewers on what channel to press and on what date.

PBA could boast about the record-breaking ratings on TV5 and an increased crowd attendance at both the Smart Araneta Coliseum and Mall of Asia Arena during last conference’s All-Filipino Cup, but the truth is it only covers a small portion of the total number of games.

With the FIBA Basketball World Cup just a few months more and the SMART-GILAS team hoping to assemble a competitive line-up soon, the PBA is again trying to muddle the schedule. PBA commissioner Chito Salud said the league has resorted to holding lone game on Mondays and sometimes Tuesdays to finish the tournament earlier than the original schedule and give the Spain-bound national team ample time to practice.

Salud also cited lack of venues for holding extra game besides the usual Wednesday-Friday-Saturday and Sunday schedules.

The new scheme started last 17 March 2014 with a game between Alaska and Air21 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Aces won, 88-78, for their second win in five outings. The Express evened up their slate at 2-2.

How long will the fans endure this erratic schedule and uncertainty, is anybody’s guess. One this is certain though, the league just confirmed our suspicion that they have poor planning skills.

  1. KASO PAG GAME 2, BAT PURO SMC TEAMS ANG NAGLALARO AT NAPAPANUOD NG LIVE SA TV? PAG IBANG TEAMS NA, 1ST GAME SILA KAYA LAGING DELAYED NA NAPAPANUOD O HINDI NA NGA DAHIL SOBRANG GABI N YUN. SWERTE N LANG IBANG TEAM PAG ANG KALABAN AY 1 S MGA SMC TEAMS KASI TYAK 2ND GAME SILA AT MAY LIVE COVERAGE SA TV, ANU BA YAN, MAY FAVORITISM? UNFAIR PRACTISE YATA YAN ATTY./COMM. RUDY SALUD DI BA?

  2. Wala na akong masabi at masagot sa tanong mo, Jonski. The current commissioner has adopted several questionable moves that cast doubts on the integrity of the league as a whole. Meron bang collusion ang mga teams to keep out companies that could give them a good competition? Why are the games of teams owned by SMC not telecast on a delayed basis? Why are there still a perception of unfair and unequal trade among teams? Do farm teams really exist? Ang daming tanong na di klaro ang sagot.

    1. so anong pwedeng magawa natin in this situation? should we boycott the PBA? i love the PBA p nman. how i wish n sana magkaroon uli ng isa pang liga like the MBA before n makikipag-compete sa PBA at regional ang set-up para hindi magaya s PBA n lahat halos ng fans e nahahakot ng SMC teams kasi pati yung mga bagong natututong magkainteres sa PBA e nakiki-ginebra lang naman because of their ignorance of the game at gusto lang mang asar., pati mga artista at pulitiko na walang paninindigan n gusto lang makahakot ng fans at ayaw ma-away n nakiki-ginebra n din

Hopefully, a new commissioner will take over and enforce the must-needed reforms.
